Residential camp in Lles de Cerdanya, Spain

Beginner's Horse Riding is a week on horseback for riders aged 10 to 13 who are starting out, set in the Cerdanya valley in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees. The idea is simple and absorbing: a horse and you, seven days riding out through the valley, and a camp pitched in the middle of the woods to come back to. Groups stay small, with just thirteen places per shift, and the team around them is made up of local monitors from these same valleys who are professionals in education and sport, alongside native English-speaking monitors from the United States, Canada and Great Britain. Catalan, Spanish and English all circulate at camp, with around 30% of participants coming from abroad, so English is picked up naturally rather than taught at a desk. Life here is deliberately unplugged and close to nature, in a camp that runs on solar-heated water, foldable facilities and local suppliers, so children leave with new friends, new confidence in the saddle and a taste for the mountains.

Activities

This is a single-focus week: riders aged 10 to 13 who are new to horses spend seven days learning with one horse and travelling with it around the Cerdanya valley, so the days follow the rhythm of the ride rather than a timetable of rotating workshops. With only thirteen places per shift, the group moves together and each child builds up confidence step by step, from handling and care to riding out across valley terrain. Between rides, life unfolds at the woodland campsite shared with the other Pyrene groups, where meals, evenings and camp chores are part of the learning. English runs through the whole week thanks to the native English-speaking monitors, and the deliberately phone-free, low-impact setting keeps attention on the horses, the mountains and the group.

Safety & Supervision

Children are looked after by a team of monitors who live and work in these Pyrenean valleys year-round and are professionals in education and sport, joined each summer by native English-speaking monitors from the United States, Canada and Great Britain. Group size is kept deliberately small on this programme, with only thirteen places per weekly shift, so each rider is known individually and progress in the saddle can be followed closely. International participants are met in person by the Pyrene team at Barcelona Airport or at the train station, so a child is accompanied from arrival right through to the campsite.

Screen time policy

The week is built around disconnecting: Pyrene asks campers to forget about their phones and reconnect instead with nature, with new friends and with themselves. With days spent riding through the valley and evenings in a campsite in the woods, screens simply have no place in the rhythm of the stay.

Accommodation & campus

Tents

Campers sleep out in the middle of the woods, with lightning in the night sky and rain on their faces part of the experience rather than something to hide from. The campsite is built from mobile and foldable facilities that are taken down at the end of the season, leaving the forest exactly as it was, and hot water comes from solar panels, so showers after a day's riding carry no CO2 emissions. All waste produced at camp is recycled, and daily life is organised around simplicity and shared responsibility among the group.

The campus

Woodland campsite in the Cerdanya valley, in the Catalan Pyrenees

The camp sits in the forest of the Cerdanya valley, surrounded by the peaks and rivers that make up the riding terrain, and it is designed to leave no trace: the facilities are mobile and foldable, hot water is heated by solar panels, and the camp makes use of existing public facilities instead of building new ones. Food and supplies come from responsible local suppliers in the valley, and all waste is recycled, so the campsite works as a small, self-contained community in the middle of the woods.
