Residential theater camp in Bury Saint Edmunds, United Kingdom

For young people who love films, whether it’s creating them or acting in them, YFA’s all-inclusive Summer Camp is a dream come true: a chance to eat, sleep and breathe movies! The camp is held at Culford School, one of the UK’s leading boarding schools, and includes all board, meals, tuition, excursions, equipment and activities. Students on YFA Summer Camp will divide into 2 crews: FILMMAKING CREW (for aspiring filmmakers) & ACTING CREW (for aspiring actors). Students choose which Crew they wish to join for the duration of their camp. Each Crew will develop specialised skills in their own disciplines through practical exercises, workshops and masterclasses with film industry professionals. And because we passionately believe that the best way to learn to is to get out there and DO it, the Filmmaking and Acting Crews will then combine in teams to work together for the production of the movies. Each week of YFA Summer Camp culminates in a Premiere Screening of all the completed movies for friends and family in the onsite cinema. There’ll be a packed house, behind-the-scenes special features telling the real story of how that movie got made, and we’re guessing some blooper-reels too…

Theater · Arts & Creative

On arrival every student chooses one of two crews for the duration of their stay: the Filmmaking Crew, for those who want to take a movie from first idea to finished cut, or the Acting Crew, for those who want to perform on screen. Each crew spends its days on practical exercises, workshops and masterclasses led by working film industry professionals — storytelling, screenwriting, camera, sound, editing, special FX and post-production on one side; screen technique, auditioning, character and set craft on the other — before the two crews combine into mixed production teams to actually shoot the films. Students are grouped by age, 13-14 and 15-17, and the camp is deliberately open to all experience levels, from complete beginners to teenagers already building a showreel. Each week ends with a premiere in the school's onsite cinema, where the completed movies are screened for friends and family alongside behind-the-scenes features telling the story of the shoot. When crews are not on set, the social team fills the evenings with swimming, dance, yoga, table tennis, dodgeball, movie quizzes, talent shows and games, so the week swings between focused, professional-style production work and the easy sociability of a boarding-school summer.

Thank you Young Film Academy for giving me an opportunity to work with so many people who are as passionate about creating films as I am. I can honestly say the last two years of YFA summer camps combined have been the best four weeks of my life. You have helped me lean so much about myself and realise that creating films is what I love doing

Getting your child there

Airport

London Airports

Pickup service · Culford School sits about two hours from central London, and every major London airport connects to camp, with Stansted the most straightforward and Heathrow the next easiest. For families who would rather not travel alone, a member of the YFA team can meet your child inside the terminal at Stansted or Heathrow and accompany them by road to school, provided the flight lands within the designated arrival window; the transfer is charged at £180 each way per student from Stansted and £230 each way per student from Heathrow, and is requested by ticking the airport transfer option on the application form or by contacting the office afterwards. Students who prefer public transport can take the train from any of the London airports to Bury St Edmunds, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes from King's Cross or Liverpool Street, then a ten-minute taxi out to Culford. YFA can point you towards a trusted local taxi firm and asks you to send the driver and journey details for reference, as the team is not able to book taxis or arrange independent travel on your behalf.

By car

Culford School, Suffolk

Airport

London Stansted Airport

The transfer is charged at £180 each way per student and is booked by selecting the airport transfer option on the application form, or by contacting the office once the application is in. Families who prefer to travel independently can book a taxi from the airport (YFA can recommend a trusted local firm but cannot book cars on your behalf), sending the driver and journey details to the team for reference.

£180 · optional
Airport

London Heathrow Airport

Pickup service · Students flying into Heathrow can also be met in the terminal by a member of the YFA team and accompanied to Culford School, again provided the flight arrival time falls within the designated window. The charge for this longer journey is £230 each way per student, requested when completing the application or afterwards by contacting the office. Independent taxi travel from Heathrow is possible too, with driver and journey details shared with YFA in advance, as the team cannot arrange private transport itself.

Train station

Bury St Edmunds railway station

Bury St Edmunds is the nearest station, roughly ten minutes by car from Culford School, and is reachable from all the major London airports as well as directly from the capital — journeys from King's Cross or Liverpool Street take around 1 hour 45 minutes. From the station YFA recommends booking a taxi for the short run out to the school; the team can point you towards a trusted local taxi service, and you send them the driver and journey details for reference, as they cannot make the booking for you.
