Residential language & activities camp in Braunwald, Switzerland

"Education is not preparation for life, education is life" - John Dewey friLingue is politically and denominationally independent, but friLingue also has a philosophy and values. friLingue wants to support the participating young people: Humanly, socially and also politically. friLingue does not want to act as an authoritarian teacher, but rather as a friend and partner. However, this also means that friLingue expects more from the young people than in normal school lessons: responsibility, initiative, helpfulness, humor, punctuality, spontaneity, ... Just like you would expect from a real friend. friLingue thrives on the attitude that the participants bring with them. The more positive and motivated the participants are, the juhuiiiii! friLingue also wants to show young people new hobbies and interests, sensitize them to environmental issues, open up new horizons for them, open the door to the world (volunteers) and introduce them to many responsible role models. friLingue believes in a better world: Yes, we can! FriLingue organizes language camps, vacation camps and ski camps for young people in Switzerland. With friLingue you learn languages in a fun, relaxed and multicultural atmosphere - and meet other young people and make friends for life! On top of that, the young people benefit from language lessons in small groups - average in 2023: 5.2 teens per class. The vacations become an unforgettable experience. friLingue has camps at various locations in Switzerland, in Braunwald, Liddes, Estavayer-le-lac and Schwarzsee. In the morning we study German, English, French or math and the rest of the day we offer many different activities, workshops, excursions and of course an evening program.

Activities

Language & activities · Languages

The friLingue week follows a rhythm that children settle into fast. Arrival is on Sunday, with a welcome evening and a short placement test that puts everyone into the right group, and from Monday to Friday mornings belong to lessons from 9.00 to 12.30 in small groups, followed by lunch. Afternoons are the free-choice part of the day: workshops in sport, art, cooking and teamwork, or an optional communication-intensive course for children who want extra tuition in very small groups, with two half-day excursions replacing workshops during the week and a full-day trip on Saturday. Every evening has its own activity, from camp olympics and a talent show to campfires, karaoke, a games night or a relaxed film, so the day ends with the whole camp together. What holds it together is that the workshops and outings are deliberately multilingual, so the language keeps working long after the classroom closes, and the timetable stays a provisional example that campleaders adapt to the weather and the group.

I think that Switzerland is very nice and the thing I liked about the French classes were the projects that we did. Having the classes in small groups is better because the teachers can explain things individually to each student.

Everyone is very friendly and the classes are small so we have many opportunities to speak a lot. I also love Schwarzsee for the area and surroundings - the mountains are so beautiful!

I enjoyed meeting new people of different ages. The teachers were so cool and the lessons were really fun. I`ve always hated language classes at school, but since fRilingue I have a newfound motivation. I loved every day of the camp.

Safety & Supervision

Staff to camper ratio1:5

We have many staff members (1:4 or 5 ratio) in the camps and we make sure we have several staff members with medical skills / certificates in every camp. Switzerland has a great health system in general, we have many hospitals and doctors near all of our camp sites. Our camp sites are located in very quiet areas where it is safe.

Getting your child there

Airport

Zurich or Geneva

Pickup service · An airport transfer can be added to the booking, and friLingue staff accompany the children between the airport and the camp so that families flying in do not have to arrange the last leg themselves. The camp week is built around a Sunday arrival, with the welcome and the placement test taking place that evening; children travelling home without a transfer are collected on the Saturday, while those who have booked a return transfer stay one extra night and travel on the Sunday. Transfers need to be requested when you register so the team can plan the pick-up schedule, and once the camp is running the campleaders on site can be reached directly by phone or WhatsApp, with the office handling organisational questions.
