Berkshire Trails is a coed overnight camp in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, welcoming boys and girls ages 7 to 17 onto a campus that has been a camp home since 1968, when it opened as Kutsher's Sports Academy. Directors Steven and Brooke Bernstein, who met as counselors and raised their own three children at camp, run a short-session program built around a traditional, action-packed day in the Berkshires. Campers are grouped into Lower Camp (2nd–5th grades), Middle Camp (6th–8th) and Upper Camp (8th–11th), so the level of guidance and independence matches a child's age, with counselors close at hand for the youngest and acting more as mentors for the oldest. Days run from a morning flagpole through rotations of instructed activity periods, rest hour, free time and an evening activity, all of it entirely free from technology. For many families the draw is the balance: a warm, supportive community where a first-time camper can settle in, alongside enough breadth in the program that children keep discovering new skills.

The program is built on a steady daily rotation of instructed activity periods rather than long specialization blocks, so campers sample widely across a two-week session. Younger and middle divisions move through three 45-minute periods in the morning and three more in the afternoon, while Upper Camp works in longer 60-minute periods with more say over what they choose. Every activity is led by specialty counselors experienced in that skill, which means a camper can improve steadily in something familiar while still trying waterskiing or the flying trapeze for the first time. Evenings bring an all-camp activity, with extra division-specific programming for Middle and Upper Camp, and the whole day is bookended by flagpole in the morning and a snack before cabins at night. The emphasis throughout is on encouragement rather than competition: confidence, the directors say, grows when kids are supported, celebrated and nudged just outside their comfort zone.

Supervision is matched to a camper's age. In Lower Camp counselors are closely involved throughout the day, helping children manage cabin life, routines and friendships so there is always a trusted adult nearby, while Middle Camp counselors step back a little and Upper Camp counselors act as mentors who let older campers make their own decisions. Activities are taught by specialty counselors experienced in those skills rather than by generalists, and evening social time for the Middle Camp division is scheduled and supervised within the division.

Campers return to cabins (bed times vary by age)
Berkshire Trails runs as a technology-free camp. Campers spend their summer away from screens and surrounded by the outdoors, which the directors see as what gives children the space to try new things, build real friendships and discover their own interests.

Campers live in cabins with their division, and bunk life is treated as part of the program: mornings begin with bunk clean-up, and learning to share space, communicate and look after one another is something counselors actively coach. Laundry is handled once a week on site, and every camper finds a labelled mesh laundry bag waiting on their bed on arrival. Belongings should come in a soft duffle, with hard suitcases allowed only for campers who travel by plane.
