Summer Discovery builds each student's summer around a university course they choose themselves, then wraps residential life around it. Families can pick a full-day academy that stays in a single field, such as the Dartmouth Summer Scholars academies with more than five hours of class time a day, or build a custom schedule across several fields of study drawn from more than 300 courses at 15 or more campuses. Once class ends, the day shifts into the activity programme: on weekdays the campus team offers several afternoon and evening options at once so students choose what suits them, while weekends are planned as larger trips for the whole group. Middle school and Institute for the Gifted students follow a deliberately balanced day, selecting daily recreational workshops in the arts, health and sports alongside their coursework and heading off campus on excursions. What distinguishes the programme is that all of this happens on a working university campus, in residence halls staffed by a dedicated summer team, with athletic and recreation facilities, transport to activities and supervision included in tuition. Students finish with a Certificate of Completion and a letter of recognition for each course, so the social side of the summer sits alongside something tangible for a college application.

Meals are included in tuition, but the number provided differs by campus and program. Some campuses provide three meals a day seven days a week, others provide three meals Monday-Friday with fewer on weekends, and UCLA includes two meals per day (lunch and dinner). Students are housed in university dorms, complete with state-of-the art access control and security systems. Students eat at the nearby university dining halls. Students are put into dorm rooms anywhere from singles to rooms with 2-4 students depending on the campus. Many (not all) dorms are air conditioned. All include full bathrooms including private showers and more.

Pickup service · Students arriving from overseas for the New Haven campus fly into John F. Kennedy International Airport, while domestic students on that programme use Bradley International (BDL); each campus has its own recommended gateway, with Philadelphia International (PHL) for the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, Ithaca Tompkins (ITH) for Cornell, Los Angeles International (LAX) for UCLA and Boston Logan (BOS) for Dartmouth. Airfare and airport transfers sit outside tuition, but families of international students pay a single international registration fee that covers both a medical policy for the student and their airport transfers, so the arrival and departure transfer is organised for them. Domestic families arrange their own transfer, and a programme specialist can be reached by phone to confirm arrival details before travel.
