  1. Bede’s is a great school and I recommend it! The teachers and staff are great and I liked my room and the house. There are a lot of nationalities so you can make a lot of friends! We had fun and the weeks went by really fast! Bede’s is the best summer school!

  2. One of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Not only did I improve my English skills, but I also met a lot of amazing people who will stay in my memory for a long time. Every aspect of this summer school was perfect and I loved every second of it.

  3. Bede’s is a good school to make new friends and to discover new places. This summer school is really good for people who want to learn. My favourite part was the research project because we got the opportunity to have more freedom from the format and the script.

Safeguarding and the health and well-being of our students is the top priority across St Bede’s Trust Sussex. We are led by the Director of Safeguarding and Designated Safeguarding Lead, who oversees all the training of Summer School staff to ensure that everyone is aware of their role and responsibility in keeping students safe. A qualified Registered Nurse is on site at each centre to provide medical care and dispense medicines. We ask parents/ guardians to notify us in advance of any pre-existing conditions and prescription drug needs. Many of the staff are first aid trained so they are able to deal with small incidents which may occur during activities and excursions. An emergency 24/7 contact number is provided to every student and parent/guardian.

Each centre has a minimum of four senior managers on site:

Centre Director, who oversees all aspects of the school;
Academic Manager, who ensures the delivery of engaging and motivating academic programmes;
Welfare Manager, who looks after the students physical and emotional well‑being;
Activity Manager, who is responsible for a varied, enjoyable and inspiring programme of sports,activities, academies, social events and excursions. Students are looked after day and night by our on-site, dedicated staff.

Each centre has a Welfare Manager and a team of HouseParents who work closely together to make sure students feel happy and supported during their stay. Staff are residential, so students receive 24-hour supervision and many of the staff return year after year, which helps Bede’s to provide a high standard of pastoral care to students.

We recognise the key role staff play in making the student experience at Bede’s Summer Schoolspecial and memorable. That’s why Bede’s carefully selects our staff to ensure they are friendly andenthusiastic, with the skills, experience and passion to bring out the best from the students in our care. Academic Managers have a TEFL-Q qualification and all teachers meet Accreditation UK requirements for teaching English as a foreign language.

Yes, all staff go through a thorough recruitment and selection process which includes obtaining 2 references, following up all gaps in employment, running an enhanced DBS check and obtaining letters of good conduct from any country an applicant worked in in the past 5 years, also doing List 99 checks and Children’s Barred List check.

Every member of staff receives online training and a thorough induction to make sure they are fully prepared for their roles. During the course of employment, staff undergo formal observations and receive feedback, which contributes to their staff appraisals and end of employment evaluations. Some staff members are given a chance to qualify as first aiders and mental health first aiders. Teachers take part in weekly Input sessions and all staff are invited to frequent meetings to stay updated with regulations.

Bede’s School is proud of its commitment to equality and diversity among all its members. We support all our pupils, prospective pupils, staff (including contracted staff), parents, carers, guardians and other stakeholders. We treat them with respect and have due regard for their privacy and wellbeing, regardless of: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation. We have a zero tolerance policy towards discriminatory language or action that could create a hostile environment. We do not accept behaviour that amounts to harassment or exclusion of any individual.

Bede’s seeks to provide a safe and supportive environment which secures the well-being and very best outcomes for the pupils in its care. As part of that ambition, we have produced the Code of Conduct to help all employees understand the sensitivities and demands of the field in which we work. Please visit our website to find out more information.

In Eastbourne and Windlesham, students are asked to give in their phones for safekeeping on arrival and can use them for 1h a day to contact their family and friends.  In Dicker, Lancing and Royal Russell, students keep their phones, however, they cannot use it during lessons, sports and activities as well as trips and social events.  In Brighton, student are advised to use their phones wisely to allow for socialisation and advised to take caution when using phones during lessons, activities and social events.  All schools have filtered wifi network.
