Seilglede

The week is led by a head coach with coaching education from the Norwegian Sailing Federation, working alongside a team of experienced sailors who all have backgrounds as both coaches and regatta competitors. Groups are kept small, with a minimum of one coach for every five children, so every young sailor is closely followed on the water and encouraged at their own pace. Sea-safety and seamanship teaching (sjøvettopplæring) is built into the programme itself, so children learn how to behave around boats and open water while they play. Places are deliberately limited each week, with a waiting list when a week fills, which keeps the groups at a size the coaches can properly look after.

Everything happens at Oslo Seilforening's waterfront base on Lille Herbern, where the pontoons, the boat park and the swimming spot are all a few steps apart, so children move easily between sailing, paddling and games on land. The club keeps the boats the week is built around: Optimist dinghies for first solo sails, RS Feva and RS Quest for sailing in pairs and small crews, windsurf boards, kayaks, SUP boards, rowing boats and a motorboat that tows the rumperistere. Because the whole fleet belongs to the club, families do not need to bring any equipment of their own. The same sheltered site hosts the mid-week sausage grilling, which is where the group tends to gather at the end of a day on the fjord.
