friLingue's camp in Braunwald is a residential language holiday in the mountains of German-speaking Switzerland, where young people spend their mornings in language class and the rest of the day living the language. Classes are small — four to seven teenagers, an average of just over five — with young, mostly native-speaking teachers who are trained in working with minors, and a placement test on the Sunday of arrival sorts everyone into the right level from A1 through to C1. Afternoons belong to workshops the campers choose themselves and to the three excursions that fill every week, with a colourful evening programme afterwards and lights out at ten. Everyone eats together: fresh, homemade full board cooked by friLingue's own kitchen team, with plenty of regional ingredients and fruit at the mid-morning and afternoon snack breaks. Almost all children arrive on their own and English-speaking staff are always on site, so a shy first day usually turns into new friendships by the second.

The rhythm of a friLingue week is easy for a child to settle into: language lessons in small groups every morning, then afternoons given over to workshops and excursions, three outings and two workshop afternoons per week, followed by an evening programme. Workshops are genuinely elective — the choices are announced after lessons and campers sign up for whichever appeals, taking a different one each time if they like, though some, such as the media workshop, continue over a second afternoon with the same group. A workshop runs when at least five participants have signed up, and anyone whose first choice does not fill simply picks another. Optional intensive language courses are slotted in before the workshops, so a keen learner can do both on the same afternoon. What shapes the whole programme is friLingue's conviction that the language is learned in the living, not only in the classroom, which is why campers are asked for initiative, punctuality and a bit of humour rather than being treated to school discipline.

Campers are looked after throughout their stay: friLingue staff are present on site around the clock, and every camp has several team members who speak English as well as the camp language, so a child can always explain a worry in their own words. The teachers are qualified or training teachers with experience of teaching and supervising minors. Swimming is never done alone — during the designated swimming times, usually in the afternoon and occasionally in the evening, several accompanying staff are always present. Lights out is at 10pm, extended to 11 or 11.30pm at weekends depending on the camp director, and younger children may of course go to bed earlier. Alcohol and drugs are strictly forbidden and anyone caught using them is sent home immediately, and the same firmness applies to leaving the camp without permission. friLingue is clear with parents that while supervision is comprehensive, it is not a guarantee of 24-hour surveillance, and the rules and timings communicated in advance are expected to be respected.

All meals are included and cooked on site by friLingue's own kitchen team, who put a deliberate emphasis on balanced dishes made with regional ingredients. The day starts with a generous breakfast and runs through lunch and dinner, with fruit and other treats laid out at the Znüni and Zvieri breaks in between. Families whose child cannot eat gluten, lactose or other ingredients can have a menu adapted by the cooks, arranged in advance.

Screen time policy
Phones and music players may come along, but friLingue keeps screen time deliberately short so that campers spend their days talking to the new friends around them rather than looking at a display: electronic devices may be used for roughly one hour a day, plus additional time during excursions. Games consoles are not welcome at all — the camp asks families explicitly to leave Nintendos and similar devices at home, since nobody needs them here.

Campers usually sleep in multi-bed rooms, with rooms allocated by age so that each child shares with teenagers of roughly their own years — which is where a good part of the friendships are made. Some camps also have smaller bedrooms, from single up to 12 beds, and if a room really does not work out the camp team will look for another solution. friLingue's Swiss camps are housed in hotels, residences and mountain chalets. For Braunwald each participant should bring their own sleeping bag, or bed linen can be rented on site.
