Pilgrims Children and Teenagers considers the age of the students, their needs, the nature of the activity and the locations involved when calculating staff-student ratios. Our supervisory ratio will be judged on a case by case basis, taking into account the nature of the activity, the location, the risks involved and the age of the students. When staffing courses we aim for an optimal ration of 1:4, but this is not always feasible. The staffing ratios operated by Pilgrims Children and Teenagers are of 1:16 for all on-site activities and 1:10 for all offsite activities and excursions (1:8 in London) for the 8 – 17 age range. All excursion will always take place with a minimum of two staff members present and onsite activities will have available members of staff should extra help be required. There will be effective systems in place to ensure the health and safety of students on all on-site and off-site activities, including written risk assessments. International students may require more individual attention if they need additional help with the language and are less used to the environment in which activities are taking place. It is therefore the school’s policy to always exceed the recommended ratios if the safety and welfare of the students requires it.On arrivals, students are met by a dedicated team of staff who are committed to providing a safe and nurturing atmosphere. Staff are trained in recognizing safeguarding issues as well as promoting positivity and encouragement. They recognize that each student is unique with their own strengths and weaknesses. We aim to get to understand students on individual levels, their goals, fears and aspirations. Pilgrims creates a great sense of community among the students ensuring energetic activities that encouraged team building and collaboration. The students tend to feel supported not only by the staff but also by their peers.Pilgrims has dedicated support for the students 24/7 to address any concerns or emergencies. Whether it’s providing academic support, homesickness or helping with emotional issues , staff are there at hand for support.
1 staff for every 3 students

The Principal of Pilgrims Language School is Leah Luke who is in charge of all the schools and especially give support to the management teams of each school. Each school has a course director who is in charge of all the staff and students of their school. Then each school has an academic manager who works closely in support of the teachers. then each school has an assistant director who works closely with the course director in preparing the course programme.

All staff have degrees and all the TEFLERS have a universally recognized TEFL qualification.

Yes. All staff have DBS checks and references requested before working on a Pilgrims course.

All staff are put through a basic First Aid and Health and Safety course before the courses begin. They also all go through a 2 day induction before the course begins at the school, to help set up and prepare for the students arrival. All course directors have a Level 3 safeguarding qualification and include staff training on this during the induction.

Pilgrims courses are made up of diverse cultures and promote inclusion for all. Pilgrims courses encourage international friendships groups through the class make up, the colour teams created , any shared rooms and in activities. Points are awarded for making friends with different cultures and for speaking English. Pilgrims courses celebrate differences through International night. Nationalities teach us some native phrases and we learn about their culture and traditions.

We have a comprehensive Code of conduct for both staff and students. Students are well supervised on and off site to ensure good safety and clear conduct being upheld. In the event of a series of behaviour incidents of one student, parents are contacted. A rare situation.

Students are allowed mobile phone usage for at least an hour a day decided by the school. Parents can contact the course director at any time in the case of an emmergency. Parents are also informed about the times that the students are given their phones.

Activities

Overview

Our unique approach, known as the Integrated Day, seamlessly blends classroom activities with afternoon and evening experiences. What students engage in outside the classroom informs and enriches their learning within it. As facilitators, our role is to empower students to actively participate in activities, using language effectively and with assurance. This integration of real-life experiences enhances language learning and fosters a deeper connection to the language and culture. Our students have activity choices in the afternoon between a sports or art and craft activity; tennis, football, dodgeball, ultimate frisbee, T-shirt printing, clay modelling, drama, dancing... etc. In the evenings students work in teams to take part in activities that are linked to language revised in their morning lessons; Quizzes, Master Chef, Fashion Show, Debates...etc Through the activities international friendships are forged and memories are created.
