Mental Health Support – Camp Chateaugay also employs a ‘Camp Advocate,’ who is a licensed mental health professional available to provide counseling and support to campers experiencing emotional or mental health issues. Overall Mission – Camp Chateaugay’s health and nutrition program is an integral part of the camp’s mission to provide a safe and healthy environment for campers. – With full-time nurses and doctors on staff throughout the summer, the camp is well-equipped to handle various medical issues while promoting healthy living and physical activity among campers. – For medical issues that cannot be treated at camp, we take campers and staff to CVPH (Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital) in Plattsburgh, NY (40 minutes from camp), which is part of the University of Vermont Medical Center.

The Camp Chateaugay staff is one of our most valuable resources. The success of our camp is due to our staff, and we go to great lengths to find the most dedicated and experienced counselors to ensure a warm, nurturing environment for our campers. Camp Chateaugay has a very high staff return rate, and this large alumni staff base enhances our campers’ sense of family, which they look forward to every summer.

What makes our staff different:

– Counselors are at least 18 years old, have completed a minimum of one year of college, and have impressive experience working with children.
– Head Staff are at least 23 years old.
– Athletic and activity heads have deep experience coaching, teaching, or participating at a high level in the activity for which they’re hired.
– Staff development is led by industry experts.
– Background checks are completed for every staff member, ensuring each has passed a thorough background check.
– Our high counselor-to-camper ratio ensures that we have 2 to 3 counselors per cabin, and one unit leader overseeing 2-3 cabins.

Yes, Camp Chateaugay screens all potential and hired staff members, both new and returning to camp. The background checks completed are:

– Statewide/All Counties – New York
– National Sex Offender (www.nsopw.gov)
– Multi-State Sex Offender Search
– US-SOR Research Tool – deverus direct
– New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Sex Offender Registry

We ensure that our experienced team has the tools to create a safe, fun-filled, and meaningful environment for kids at Camp Chateaugay. Head staff prepare for 5 days before the full staff arrives, and then all staff attend an 8-day training camp focused on the following:

– We partner with True Colors, a company that helps employees become more effective teammates, collaborators, leaders, thinkers, and innovators. Each counselor completes a personality assessment to learn more about themselves and their peers, enabling them to collaborate effectively.
– We learn research-based methods to understand child behavior and motivation, taught by top experts:
– Social & emotional learning and bully prevention: Dr. Chris Thurber, creator of Prep4Camp, trains counselors to support campers in managing time, sleeping well, handling stress, engaging in activities, communicating clearly, and thriving at camp.

Camp Chateaugay promotes and ensures inclusion at our summer camp, fostering an environment that respects and celebrates the diversity of all campers and staff. Inclusion means creating an atmosphere where individuals of all abilities, backgrounds, races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, religions, and socioeconomic statuses feel welcome and valued.

– We embrace and value the diversity of our campers and staff, and we actively promote an inclusive environment that celebrates and respects all backgrounds.
– Our camp community includes staff and campers from all over the world—South Africa, Hungary, France, Spain, Mexico, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Poland, New Zealand, to name a few.
– Cultural awareness and sensitivity are fostered through diverse programming, educational activities, and opportunities for dialogue and understanding.

Located on our website is a document called the Camper Conduct Guide (“the Guide”), which contains information about acceptable and unacceptable behavior that Camp Chateaugay staff, campers, volunteers, and parents must know and follow to ensure a successful summer.

– The Guide is intended to empower everyone at camp and promote a positive and safe camp environment.
– Staff also have a separate Policies and Procedures Guide that we review extensively during our pre-camp training.

We are a technology-free camp for campers.

– Campers may use their smartphones or tablets while en route to camp, but upon arrival, all electronics are collected and safely stored for the summer.
– CITs are allowed access to their electronics in a designated area from 9:00 PM – 11:00 PM daily.
– Campers may use an MP3 player for music as long as it does not allow Wi-Fi or video (we highly recommend the “CampFire player” available at www.campfireplayer.com) and Kindle or other book readers.
– Staff may keep their mobile phones in private housing, but they are not to be used in front of campers at any time.

スケジュール

Our days are fun-filled and packed with engaging activities, with time built in throughout the day for rest and relaxation, cabin community-building, and nourishing meals. Our flexible-but-structured schedule lets kids explore new things and feel “in charge,” helping them develop a sense of proficiency and responsibility in areas they really love.

– Campers have 6 activity periods per day, each lasting 55 minutes.
– 2 or 3 periods are with their cabins (bunk activities) to foster friendship, camaraderie, and to give them exposure to activities they might not have chosen on their own.
– 3 to 4 activities are chosen by campers themselves (electives), selected on a weekly basis.
– Most activities are 1 period each, but some intensive courses, like sailing and windsurfing, require a double period each day.
