Residential German camp in Bad Schussenried, Germany
Just like a boarding school, the Humboldt-Institut Bad Schussenried combines classrooms, leisure facilities and student dorm rooms on one site. With space for up to 300 students from all over the world, Bad Schussenried is Germany’s largest boarding school for studying German as a foreign language. The school has an incredible infrastructure that allows children and teenagers alike to pursue countless athletic and recreational activities, both indoors and outdoors. Students stay in twin rooms directly on campus. All rooms have their own en-suite bathroom, as well as a balcony. The students who will share a room with each other are carefully selected to have a comparable German language level and similar age, yet speak different native languages. This way students are encouraged to speak and practice German with each other outside of the classroom. Boys and girls are housed separately. All students receive three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Laundry service is offered daily to all students free of charge for their personal laundry. Bed linen and towels will be provided and changed regularly.

Life here is built around a rhythm of lessons in the morning and a full, staff-led activity programme in the free time that follows, so no afternoon or evening is left to chance. Each day brings a different mix of sport, games and cultural activities organised by the resident counsellors and activity instructors, who actively encourage every student to join in and make sure newcomers are drawn into the group rather than left on the sidelines. Because the campus brings classrooms, dorms, sports halls, pool, climbing wall and games rooms together on one site, the programme runs whatever the weather, moving indoors to table football, billiards, ping-pong or the sauna when it rains and out to the lake, the sports fields and the mountain bikes when it is fine. Twice a week the routine opens up for excursions, a half day on Wednesday and a full day on Saturday, so the language leaves the classroom and gets used in shops, museums and city streets. Participation in the leisure programme and the excursions is compulsory, and students are expected at all classes, meals and scheduled activities, which is precisely what keeps the German-speaking, German-living atmosphere going with young people from around 69 nations in the house.

Full board is included: three meals a day are served in the school's dining room, freshly cooked daily by the on-site kitchen staff, with a fruit basket available throughout the day. Special meals such as vegetarian dishes or meals without certain ingredients can be provided on request.

Screen time policy
Free wireless internet is available throughout the course centre, so your child can stay in touch with home and look things up for their German homework. The day itself, however, is firmly structured: attendance at all classes, meals, scheduled activities and excursions is compulsory, and the counsellors run a full afternoon and evening programme, which leaves screen time as something that fits around a busy day rather than filling it. The school does not publish any further restrictions on phones or devices, so parents with specific wishes are best advised to discuss them with the team on site.

Our students stay in twin rooms and few triple rooms directly on campus. All rooms have their own en-suite bathroom, as well as a balcony. We carefully choose the students who will share a room with each other. We take care to match roommates who have a comparable German language level and are of similar age, yet speak different native languages. This way we encourage them to speak and practice German with each other outside of the classroom. Boys and girls are housed separately. We serve three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) in the school’s dining room. Our kitchen staff offers a varied and healthy diet and cooks all meals fresh every day. A fruit basket is available throughout the day. Laundry service is offered daily to all students free of charge for their personal laundry. Families driving themselves come directly to Zellerseeweg 11, 88427 Bad Schussenried, a few minutes from the town centre, where the school has its own parking spaces. Arrival day is the Sunday before the course starts and departure the Saturday after it ends; if your travel days differ, the school asks to be told as early as possible. Pickup service · Students travelling by rail are picked up at Bad Schussenried railway station by school staff free of charge and driven the short distance to the campus. As with all arrivals, travel details should be passed on in advance so someone is waiting at the platform, and the pick-up is planned for the official arrival day, the Sunday before the course begins, with the return trip on the Saturday after it ends.
