Visão geral

We offer two exciting levels of English courses: Intensive English Language for students wanting to build confidence and fluency and Advanced English for fluent speakers ready to stretch their skills and explore new challenges. Both programmes blend classroom learning with our Multi-Activity Programme, which includes Sports, Science, Crafts, Cookery, Swimming, Dance, Drama, and Music plus many more exciting options across the week. Every student enjoys a balance of lessons, fun activities, and half-day or full-day excursions to famous UK cities and attractions.

Advanced English Programme students can choose to take part in our optional University Preparation Classes.

Courses, depending on ability, are for children aged 8 - 11 and 12 - 16. By splitting the groups by age it allows pupils to take part in lessons and activities in an age appropriate environment. Our courses are the perfect way to experience British academic life, build confidence, and prepare for full-time boarding school or future university study in the UK. We are delighted that many former Summer School pupils choose to join Bromsgrove as full time students

We also welcome families with younger children aged 5–7. During the day, children attend our Pre-Prep Summer Camp, mixing with English children in a warm, nurturing environment.

Intensive English is aimed at those whose level of English is beginner or intermediate
Students take a placement test and questionnaire on arrival so that they can be placed in the best class for their needs, dependent on age and English ability. The ages, number and ability of students change week to week, and we adapt class levels to ensure they match students’ needs. Half the day is spent in intensive English lessons, taught by specialist teachers from International House, Bristol. The English lessons will develop practical language skills in an English speaking environment, speaking and writing skills using a topic-based approach and oral communication skills though debates and presentations. Each student will receive 20 hours of English tutoring a week. The other half of the day is spent taking part in the Multi Activity programme where each child has a free choice of a wide range of activities to choose from.

The Advanced English Programme is for students who are already fluent in spoken and written English or whose first language is English. Lessons build on existing skills and there are sessions in debating, public speaking, creative writing, magazine writing, report writing and presentations. As with the Intensive English course, half the day is split into English lessons with the other half spent taking part in multi-activities or going on trips. Alternitively students may sign up to the optional university preparation classes and will spend time out of activities visiting UK universities, perfecting their interview skills and draughting their personal statements.

Multi Activities on offer include a massive selection – sports, creative arts and technology, dance, fitness, cookery, team games and just about anything else we can think of! Some activities sessions are also attended by local day pupils so that our international visitors have the chance to practise their English naturally.

We also welcome families with younger children aged 5–7. During the day, children attend our Pre-Prep Summer Camp, mixing with English children in a warm, nurturing environment. Parents enjoy daily excursions to London, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, Bicester Village, Manchester, Birmingham, and more, and have access to the school gym. Evenings and weekends are family time, with parents remaining responsible for their children’s care and enjoying trips together.

Our boarding houses are modern and comfortable, all rooms are ensuite. In each boarding house there are plenty of spaces to socialise, including Common Rooms and kitchens with plenty of spaces for youngsters to spend time together.

We excel at sports and our sports facilities are extensive and, like our 100 acres of grounds, are well maintained. Another area of strength is Music and Drama and many of our Summer Camp activities take advantage of our superb theatre and music performance spaces.

At our camps, safety is paramount. We have 24/7 gatehouse security and all boarding houses are locked with coded access. Sports facilities are also secured with codes. Additionally, all staff are fully trained in safeguarding protocols, we have regular fire drills, and we follow robust health and safety policies to ensure every child’s well-being. In terms of medical care, several of our staff are first-aid qualified, and we also have a nurse who visits the boarding houses daily to ensure any medical needs are promptly addressed.
vWe maintain a strong staff-to-student ratio to ensure every child is well supported. Typically, our ratio is around 1 staff member to every 12 to 15 students, depending on the activity. This ensures close supervision, personalized attention, and a safe, engaging environment for all our campers.

Our leadership and supervision are carefully structured. The Director of the Summer School ensures overall oversight. Each boarding house is led by a dedicated Houseparent, supported by an Assistant Houseparent, ensuring children are cared for in their residential environment. On activities, we have an Activities Coordinator who supervises the Activities Assistants and ensures all children are safely engaged and supported during each session.

Most of our staff are already employed by Bromsgrove School during term time, bringing professional experience and qualifications. Many of our teachers are fully qualified educators. Additionally, any staff who lead sports or activities are appropriately qualified in their specific field—whether that’s certified sports coaching or other specialized training. This ensures a high standard of care and instruction across all activities

All staff undergo the full suite of background checks required for working in a school setting. This includes enhanced DBS checks (Disclosure and Barring Service), verification of references, and any additional safeguarding checks to ensure we uphold the highest safety standards for all children in our care.

We have a strong focus on continuity and development. Some of our Upper Sixth students train as ‘Rookies’ and work with us for a year, gaining valuable experience. Many of our Houseparents and returning staff already work at Bromsgrove during term time, ensuring they are highly trained. Many of our summer staff return year after year, meaning they come back with experience and deep knowledge of our camp environment.

Our summer school is proud to be a diverse environment, welcoming children from a wide range of nationalities and backgrounds. We are also committed to inclusion: we’ve previously supported children with special educational needs, including those who may use wheelchairs or require specific support. To ensure we meet every child’s needs effectively, we ask for plenty of information in advance. This allows us to prepare and ensure that every child can participate fully and safely.

Our code of conduct is rooted in respect, kindness, and cooperation—we expect all campers to treat each other and staff with respect. At camp, we have three guiding rules. First, be kind to yourself—like remembering sun cream and self-care. Second, be kind to each other—support anyone who needs help. Third, be kind to the environment—our grounds are over 100 acres of beauty, and we all have a role in keeping them that way. These simple rules help shape a safe, respectful, and enriching experience for everyone. As for safety protocols, we follow clear safeguarding procedures. Children are supervised at all times, all activities are risk-assessed, and we have emergency response plans in place. Combined, this ensures both a positive atmosphere and a safe environment for all.

Children are welcome to bring mobile phones to camp, but their use is limited. Phones aren’t allowed during activities or English lessons, but children will have access at least once a day for personal use. They won’t keep phones overnight unless there’s a specific reason. Older children might have overnight access, but if we notice they’re not sleeping well or fully engaging in camp life, we’ll ask them to hand phones in overnight to ensure their well-being and participation.
