Residential German camp in Cologne, Germany
Cologne, located on the banks of the Rhine River and with a population over 1 million, is the fourth largest city in Germany. The impressive Cologne Cathedral, the biggest Gothic church in northern Europe, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the landmark of the city. Cologne is known for its cheerful, cosmopolitan and tolerant spirit. In the summertime it offers a great variety of concerts, operas, dramas, musicals and open-air events, and the Rhine beckons visitors to take walks, bicycle trips or boat rides along its winding course. The school Our students are guests at the Cologne City Hostel in the Deutz district, on the eastern bank of the Rhine, right across the river from the main train station and in view of the famous Cologne Cathedral. Our program center features modern, high-quality equipment and facilities in a quiet but central location. Our classes are held in the attractive and bright seminar rooms of the hostel, which are all equipped with up-to-date technology. As our students are housed in the same building where they have their classes, they can conveniently walk there from their rooms without having to leave the premises.

The Cologne programme is a complete package in which language lessons, free time and excursions all pull in the same direction. Mornings and the school week belong to German, and once class is over the staff open up a fresh activity programme every single day, mixing sport, games and cultural outings, with counsellors who encourage and motivate students to join in rather than leaving them to their own devices. Two excursions a week punctuate the rhythm: a half-day outing on Wednesday and a full day on Saturday, both accompanied by staff. Because the hostel in Deutz is a short walk from the main downtown sights, much of the programme unfolds in the city itself, on foot or on the school's own mountain bikes, and the quiet building is a comfortable place to come back to after a busy afternoon in town. Participation in the leisure programme and excursions is compulsory, which is what makes the group gel and turns every game, tour and museum visit into another real-life situation for speaking German. There is still room to breathe, relax and make friends with students from other countries, since roommates and groups are deliberately mixed by native language.

Meals
Full board is part of the course package: students receive three meals a day in the residence. The camp states meals are plentiful so students do not need to buy extra food, and special diets can be catered for on request.

The building is very well-equipped. Our students stay in comfortable, modern twin rooms with en-suite bathrooms. We carefully choose the students who will share a room with each other. We take care to match roommates who have a comparable German language level and are of similar age, yet speak different native languages. This way we encourage them to speak and practice German with each other outside of the classroom. Boys and girls are housed separately. Our students receive three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner).For the students’ personal laundry, there are coin washing machines and dryers in the hostel. Bed linen and towels will be provided and changed regularly.

Drop-off at the Cologne City Hostel
Families driving their child themselves bring them to the course centre at the youth hostel in Deutz: c/o Jugendherberge Köln-Deutz, Siegesstraße 5, 50679 Köln. Arrival day is the Sunday before the course starts and departure day the Saturday after it ends; if your travel days differ, the school asks to be told as early as possible. Pickup service · Students travelling by rail are collected from Köln Hauptbahnhof by Humboldt staff free of charge and taken the short way over the Rhine to the hostel in the Deutz district, which lies directly across the river from the main station and within sight of the Cathedral. As with flights, travel details should be passed to the booking office in good time so the pick-up can be organised, and transfers on days other than the official Sunday arrival or Saturday departure need to be agreed in advance.
