Students will experience an immersive, educational and fun programme, combining exceptional English language tuition and academic learning, with a range of exciting activities and premium excursions to some of the UK’s top destinations including Oxford, London and Thorpe Park theme park. Students will improve their language proficiency and progress academically in English, STEM and Global Solutions, whilst also developing creativity, confidence, leadership and teamwork….and of course, make friends with other young people from around the world.

Exciting and unique academic programme with a global focus. Students with lower English levels attend 'Confident in English' classes, students with a higher English level learn about Shakespeare in our 'Beginning the Bard' course. Our STEM classes are unique and offer lots of opportunities for students to leave the classroom and conduct interesting hands on experiments. In our Global Solutions lessons students will learn about globalisation and global business.
We accept students with English levels of A2, B1, B2,C1 and C2 and we structure our sessions according to ability and age.

Activity Programme
Summer should be fun – and we balance our students’ academic programme of study with a wide range of activities and trips.
Students will be able to enjoy many of the excellent facilities available on the Downe House campus and will also be taken on excursions off-site.
Sport: including swimming (in the School’s large heated pool), tennis, football, basketball, badminton, table-tennis, lacrosse, mini-Olympics, pickleball.
Drama and the Creative Arts: we will make use of the School’s theatre and amazing art rooms
Evening activities: a varied programme of fun activities including pottery painting, smoothie making, games, amateur dramatics, movies and more
Shopping: there will be opportunities for your child to shop for gifts and souvenirs – a great way to practice their English language skills!

Our exceptional academic programme of study is designed to engage and excite young learners.
Your child will be taught by experienced and highly qualified Downe House teachers. Lessons are delivered through workshops, experiments and activities and will involve working as a team. This style of learning is fun and allows the students to collaborate and improve their communication skills.
Our programme of study includes the following sessions:
English Language – targeted to your child’s ability
STEM – learn about science and technology through exciting projects.
Global Solutions – Students will be encouraged to think about the world and the challenges we face such as climate change, sustainability, innovation, and equality, and come up with solutions to make our planet a better place.
We want our students to think big and become ‘World Ready’.

For students who have a weaker English level (A2//B1) we offer our ‘Confidence in English’ course.
During this course, students will:
Develop their ability to communicate in English, gaining confidence in speaking, writing, and listening to real life English.
Enhance their grammar and vocabulary, mastering some of the fundamental rules of English grammar so that students can communicate more precisely and clearly.
Refine their spoken skills, demonstrating an ability to speak confidently in English and answer audience questions

We offer our students a varied and busy programme with academic lessons in the morning and activities in the afternoon.
We include four off-site excursions: London, Oxford, Thorpe Park and a local shopping trip. There is also a British Army activity included and this is followed by a movie in our auditorium with popcorn.
Students can enjoy a BBQ on the first Sunday and on subsequent Fridays.
During the evenings, after supper, students can enjoy a range of activities in their boarding houses, including baking, basketball, pottery painting, door plaque decorating etc.
We think it is important for students to have some down time too so we are careful to incorporate this into their schedule.

Students will love staying in our luxurious and modern boarding houses. Boys and girls will be in separate boarding areas.
The bedrooms are comfortable and spacious and there are also large common areas where students can relax in the evenings.
Each bedroom will be shared by 3 to 4 students (of a similar age). There are a few rooms for 2 students only – please register your interest and note this comes at an additional cost.
The students have access to the kitchens so they can make noodles, cookies and smoothies
in the evenings.
There are also some outdoor spaces with games on offer.
On each corridor there are plenty of share bathroom facilities available.

The Downe House Summer School operates for two weeks from Saturday 11 July to Saturday 25 July 2026.
The fully inclusive price for two weeks is £4,800; the special early booking price is £4,500 (book before 15 January 2026).
One week only and non-boarding packages (day attendance only) are also on offer – please enquire for more information.
Included in the price:

A £500 non-refundable deposit is required at the time of booking to secure a place. Cancellation – Please contact us immediately if you need to cancel your booking . If you cancel before the Saturday, 11 July, 2026, a sliding cancellation policy will be in operation as follows: More than 60 days notice = Loss of deposit only 60-45 days before departure = 75% cancellation fee 44-20 days before departure = 90% cancellation fee 19-1 day before departure = 100% cancellation fee If you cancel before Saturday, 11 July, 2026, some or the full fee will be forfeited, as outlined above. Cancellation claims must be supported by documentary evidence. Where the reason for cancellation is due to a visa refusal, please see Student Visas, as separate conditions apply. Please note, bookings are non-transferable. Any unused portion of the course fee is non-refundable. If cancellation occurs the £500 deposit is non-refundable, however, we can consider rolling this over to the following year in certain circumstances.
We have a dedicated Summer School Director who overseas the operation of the summer school, they supervise all the staff and are supported by the heads of section for each area. Both the Academic Director and the Welfare Director report into the Summer School Director. There is also the Head of Activities and the Head of Excursions and Transport who work alongside the Project Manager, the House parents and the rest of the staff. Overnight supervision is provided by our expert team of boarding staff who sleep in the boarding houses with the students.
All staff at Downe House Summer School are already employed by Downe House school so they are very experienced in their various roles.
Downe House staff qualification requirements vary by role, with teaching positions needing relevant degrees and other staff requiring specific certifications and relevant work experience. All staff, regardless of role, are expected to embody the school’s values and benefit from continuous professional development opportunities.
Absolutely, our dedicated Human Resources team carefully conduct background checks on ALL staff and they can only begin work once their enhanced DBS checks have been completed. We also obtain references and follow up any employment gaps.
We carry out a detailed induction plan for all our staff so they are prepared for their roles in the summer school, this includes them attending INSET training sessions, they are also issued with a detailed summer school Staff Handbook, this includes all the information they will need to carry out their duties. All staff are included in our performance review process. We hold regular staff meetings before and during the two week period and undergo formal lesson observations. At the end of the Summer School we complete a full staff evaluation to ensure feedback is captured.

Students are asked to agree to our DH Summer School Code of Conduct before they commence the programme and the safety procedures are highlighted to them during their formal induction talk and also within each of the boarding houses, we also use the noticeboards around the school to highlight this information.
Students are NOT permitted to use their phones during lessons, activities and mealtimes. However, students can use their phones first thing in the morning, at breaktimes, in the evenings and when on excursions. If they need to speak to their parents we allow then to use their phones.
Our Wi-fi network is filtered and monitored.

The nearest airport to Downe House Summer School is London Heathrow. Airport pickup is available upon request. London Heathrow and London Gatwick pickup free of charge. Other London airports and bespoke transfers available at additional charge of £200 per transfer.
