Deposit is required to hold the spot. Deposits are refundable until February 15th. Next payments are due April 1st and May 20th, and are not refundable after those due dates. Travel Insurance is recommended to cover any cancellation refunds.

Green Cove has consistently held a grade “A” rating from the North Carolina State Board of Health. We have an infirmary on camp premises with two registered nurses in residence; a doctor in residence serves both Green Cove and our brother camp, Mondamin. There is a hospital six miles away. Regular health checks are made daily (showers, brushed teeth, etc.); parents receive weekly letters from counselors and a telephone call in case of any unusual problems. When it comes to safety, we are conservative and take extra precautions. Always no more than 6 children to 1 Lifeguard in the water (Red Cross certified); no more than 6:1 ratio campers to staff on trips; Harnesses, helmets, and ropes/knots always triple checked by staff at the climbing tower; Helmets worn at all times when climbing, biking, and riding horses; conservative choices made when it comes to risk (ex. level of climb or river for the skill of the campers). All trips have a checked out Designated Trip Leader who is over the age of 21, Wilderness First Responder Certified, and has been through our rigorous “check out” process.

Each age group, which has about 45 campers, has a “Line Head,” who oversees the “Line.” This person has usually been on staff for several years and if often a “mom” or at least “mom age!” Those four individuals report to our two Program Directors, who have been with us for decades.

The Line Heads keep an eye on the Counselors to be sure we have sufficient supervision.

All activities have an “Activity Head” who reports to the Activities Director, who has been with us for 6 years.

The “Head staff” and the Admin all keep eyes and ears out at all times, and all staff know that they can lean on any of these individuals for advice. Admin includes our Director, two Program Directors, and an Activities Director.

All staff are required to have complete one year away from graduating High School. That can be a year of college, a Gap year, or a job. We require a staff application and five references. We do Zoom or in person interviews and run background checks.

For the activities, the staff must have skill and knowledge in the activity that they will be teaching.

We run several staff trainings in May. We run Lifeguard Training for all waterfront staff, Wilderness First Responder for all Trip Leaders, CPR and First Aid for all staff, and then staff Orientation. During the week of staff orientation, we train staff on how to manage a cabin and how to be a counselor at Green Cove. We go over conflict resolution, bullying, mental and emotional health, boundaries, abuse, activity training/teaching, rules/policies, and much more.

When staff return year after year, they have the opportunity to take on more leadership responsibilities, and we train them on how to do so. Sometimes that is in the camper management area, and sometimes it is in the Activity skills or trips area.

About 5% of campers identify as a racial minority. We have a scholarship foundation that supports families who are considered to have low socio-economic status. This foundation supports about 5% of our total camper population.

We are not a faith-based camp and have no religious affiliation. Folks of all faiths are welcome, and we are happy to accommodate any personal practices (ex: private prayer, dietary restrictions, etc.).

Our community is very welcoming and inclusive of people from all backgrounds, faiths, and sexuality. At this time, we are unable to accept campers or staff who were assigned male at birth or identify as male. We have a small population of campers and staff who identify as non-binary. We train our staff on how to provide a safe and inclusive environment.

GREEN COVE HONOR AND CONDUCT CODE

Purpose: A primary reason for coming to camp is to have fun. The following honor code is a guide that can help us all to have a great experience this summer. We believe that Green Cove campers are ready to take care of themselves, with a little help. This is your chance to really do your part to create a fantastic summer!

I understand that as a Green Cove camper I am an important part of the camp community, and that my actions have a big impact on those around me. Knowing this, I will do my best to make sure that the impact I make on others is good. I will strive to cooperate with and respect other campers and all staff members which includes counselors, office staff, kitchen and maintenance staff.

1. I will live honestly. I will answer questions truthfully.

2. I will follow all camp safety rules, such as those regarding the waterfront, the horses, vehicles, etc. I understand that safety rules are necessary to do the things we do safely, and that camp cannot take responsibility for my safety when I do not cooperate. I realize that breaking safety rules can endanger others as well as myself.

3. I understand that fighting, bullying and ganging up on others are unacceptable. If I am having a problem with another camper and cannot work it out on my own, I will go to a counselor for help.

4. I understand that stealing is not tolerated, which includes borrowing without asking. To avoid being accused, I will not enter someone else’s cabin without permission. I will not vandalize (damage or ruin) the property of others, or that of camp. I understand that everything belongs to someone, so I will not assume that “nobody wants it”, or “it doesn’t belong to anyone”.

5. I understand that a practical joke should be funny to the person it is played on. Pranks meant to harm or make fun, which damage property or put anyone (including myself) at risk of injury, are not acceptable.

6. I understand that lighters and matches are not allowed, except with a counselor’s consent on a camping trip. Fire extinguishers are not to be touched or played with.

7. If someone else is breaking a rule, I will walk away. I understand that not doing so would make me a rule breaker also. If safety is a concern, I will tell a counselor right away.

8. I will not use or have in my possession alcohol, drugs, or nicotine products such as tobacco and vaping devices.

9. I will not use or have in my possession any device with phone or WIFI capabilities.

10. I will not leave camp boundaries without a counselor. Outside activity hours, the Barn, The Waterfront, and the Tower are off limits.

If a camper’s behavior becomes dangerous to herself or others, or if her behavior has a severe negative impact, she will most likely be sent home. This will be decided by the camper’s Line Head or Calla Bell Williamson.

HONOR CODE PLEDGE
I understand that, above all, camp expects honesty, and will not allow me to stay at camp should I behave in a way which is unsafe, or is a bad influence on others, or which makes life difficult for others. I understand that breaking these rules is taken very seriously, and is likely to result in my being sent home; in most cases I will NOT be given a second chance.

We do not allow campers to have any devices that have wi-fi or data. So no phones, tablets, smart watches, or even music players that can connect to internet.
