The summer school offers a rigorous yet inspiring academic experience designed specifically for older teenagers preparing for university or international study.
1) Elective Pathways (students choose 2) – each teen chooses subjects based on personal interest, not level — giving them ownership and motivation. Subjects are taught by specialist teachers your child will meet throughout the 2 weeks:
i) Public Speaking & Debating
Boosts confidence, persuasive communication, and the ability to express opinions clearly — ideal preparation for future studies or job interviews.
ii) The World of Work
Teaches practical skills such as CV writing, personal statements, interview preparation, teamwork, leadership, and understanding English-speaking workplace culture.
ii) Innovation & Technology
Explores AI, robotics, biotechnology, VR/AR, ethics, and the future of technology — excellent for tech-curious teens.
iv) Global Issues
Focuses on sustainability, climate change, human rights, global health, and international cooperation. Encourages critical thinking and global awareness.
2) Project Work: Real-world, university-style tasks.
In multicultural teams, students complete a practical project such as:
Designing a start-up and pitching it;
Creating a sustainability campaign;
Proposing an innovation to improve school or university life.
This develops teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, planning, and presentation skills — a very reassuring preparation for university-style learning.

Summer School staff live on campus, supervise students around the clock, and accompany them during lessons, activities and excursions. Boys and girls are accommodated separately, and clear supervision is in place at all times across the university residence, on-campus and off-campus visits and activities.
Classes are delivered by EngXcel, which is British Council–accredited, meaning teachers meet strict professional standards. Guest speakers, activity leaders, guides and other instructors are appropriately qualified in their specialisms, ensuring high-quality, safe instruction.
Yes. As a UK university hosting students under 18, ARU follows safeguarding regulations requiring suitability checks for all staff working with young people. These checks are part of the university’s strict safeguarding procedures as well as a British Council requirement for all staff working with minors (ie students under 18).
Experio English Summer School staff receive thorough training before students arrive, with a strong focus on safeguarding, first aid, health and safety, and pastoral care, as required for all UK universities. All summer school staff complete basic First Aid training and are fully briefed on the summer school’s welfare procedures, emergency protocols, supervision standards and child-protection responsibilities. EngXcel, the accredited English-teaching partner, employs teachers who meet strict British Council requirements and follow ongoing professional development standards in modern language-teaching practice. This ensures that every member of staff—from teachers to activity leaders—is fully prepared to support students safely, confidently and professionally.
The summer school welcomes students from over 15 nationalities, creating a friendly, multicultural environment where diversity is celebrated. The university and summer school’s values emphasise respect, community and personal development for every student.
Clear safeguarding rules, age-appropriate accommodation guidelines, supervised movement around campus, and structured daily schedules ensure safety and good behaviour. Orientation sessions teach students how to stay safe, who to talk to, and how support systems work.
Students are welcome to bring mobile phones, but usage is sensibly managed to help them stay focused, safe and socially engaged. Phones may be used freely during designated free-time periods—such as before breakfast, in the residence, and after evening activities—but not during lessons, afternoon sessions, excursions (except for photos), or organised evening events. Staff remind students if usage becomes distracting, and in rare cases may hold a phone temporarily to support positive behaviour. WiFi is available campus-wide, and parents are encouraged to contact their child during suitable free-time hours, with staff always available for urgent communication.
