Downe House Summer School

Downe House maintains high safety and welfare standards as confirmed by an Independent Schools Inspectorate report in November 2024. The school has a strategic approach to risk assessment and maintains a sage, tranquil campus on a large estate. We publish a student Code of Conduct, which includes all the relevant safety information. We hold a full formal induction talk for students so they are aware of the safety procedures around the campus and online. We have a specific Summer School Safeguarding Policy in place and we have dedicated and qualified safeguarding staff. In each boarding house we follow strict safety guidelines in line with our Downe House School policies, which can be found on our website.

We have a dedicated Director who overseas the operation of the summer school, they supervise all the staff and are supported by the heads of section for each area.

Our academic teaching staff are all fully qualified teachers.

Absolutely, our dedicated Human Resources team carefully conduct background checks on ALL staff and they can only begin work once their DBS checks have been completed.

Staff attend INSET training sessions and they are issued with a detailed summer school Staff Handbook, this includes all the information they will need to carry out their duties. All staff are included in our performance review procedures.

Downe House School is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), working to embed these principles across the school’s culture, curriculum, and staff policies. The school aims to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all, evident in its inclusive policies, a focus on community service, and partnerships like the one with the Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation, which aims to provide opportunities to pupils who would otherwise be unable to access a Downe House education. Downe House has a dedicated Diversity and inclusion policy, which the summer school follows.

Students are asked to agree to our DH Summer School Code of Conduct before they commence the programme and the safety procedures are highlighted to them during their formal induction talk and also within each of the boarding houses, we also use the noticeboards to highlight this information.

Students are NOT permitted to use their phones during lessons, activities and mealtimes. However, students can use their phones first thing in the morning, at breaktimes, in the evenings and when on excursions. If they need to speak to their parents we allow then to use their phones.
