English Plus Courses Five different programmes are available
Each week day combines 4 hours of language learning with 3 hours of your chosen specialist activity. English is taught in small groups according to ability, which is set following a placement test at the beginning of the week. Project English is an exciting task-based course component that allows students to work together to design and create their very own product, be it a video presentation, class magazine or even a play!
This helps students develop their interpersonal and team working skills in a highly communicative setting, ensuring the English they learn is used in realistic and meaningful contexts. Conversation is focused by theme to give a meaningful context and to encourage engagement. A variety of teaching techniques including projects, group work, research tasks and worksheets ensure that no two days are the same which reinforces and embeds learning. Trinity College exams* can be taken by students, providing an internationally-recognised qualification. Two excursions* take place on the weekend to some
of the world-famous tourist sites in the local area including Stonehenge Oxford, Bristol and the historic city of Bath.
English Plus Riding
Stonar’s exceptional riding facilities include indoor and outdoor arenas, extensive stabling, dressage field, show-jumping ring, cross country courses and off-road hacking track. Director of Riding, Darrell Scaife, FBHS, UKCC Darrell Scaife is a British Eventing Master Coach and FEI Coach. As a former 4* international event rider, Chef d’Equipe for Team GB’s U21 squad and Olympic Coach to the Zimbabwe eventing team, his exceptional credentials underpin the high quality coaching and riding experience available at Stonar. Students will each be allocated their own horse to join one of our riding programmes, with
something for riders for all abilities. NB: Video evidence required for students wishing to apply for the advanced riding programme.
Beginner: Taught in groups of 4 students to 1 coach and 1 assistant, the beginner’s programme gives novice riders the chance to work on their basic skills including position, walking and trotting and will build up to canter and small jumps, if ability permits. Pupils will improve in confidence and skill, giving them a firm foundation.
Intermediate: Pupils will build on their knowledge and experience in a small group with 6:1 ratio. Suitable for competent riders or those beginning to compete, students will make progress in gaits and jumping. Alongside riding technique, students will build knowledge of equestrian theory.
Advanced: Experienced riders will have the opportunity to work in-depth in the discipline of their choice in 4:1 groups. Three options are available: Dressage, Show Jumping and Eventing. Expert coaches will work with riders to improve every aspect of their skill and performance, challenging students to push themselves and exceed their own expectations.
English Plus Tennis
Expert coaching provides junior tennis players the chance to take their skills to the next level. Whether your child plays for fun or likes to compete, the tennis coaching will work on every aspect of their game with focused demonstration, feedback and
practise. Energetic and enthusiastic coaches working in a 1:6 ratio get the best out of students and stretch players of every ability.
English Plus Multi-Activities
An exciting and varied sports programme including football, field hockey, basketball, badminton and swimming gives active children plenty to keep them busy. Coached by sports professionals, students will improve their skills and learn new ones, as well as improving soft skills such as co-operation and team spirit.
English Plus Art & Photography
Students will find plenty to inspire them in Stonar’s first class art and photography facilities which boast 3 art studios, a kiln for ceramics, a dark room and an IT suite for Photoshop work. In sessions taught by well qualified art teachers, students will have lots of opportunities to hone their technique and try new things. As well as studio-based work, students will have the opportunity to sketch and photograph in Stonar’s beautiful grounds.
English Plus Performing Arts (2 weeks course)
An exciting introduction to a variety of lively stage formats, giving students a grounding in dance, drama and music as they work with experienced drama teachers and choreographers to create a mini production, performed to the community at the end of the week. Students will learn on their feet in skills focused workshops and rehearsals so every child can make the most of their talents.
Stonar’s onsite accommodation offers a comfortable homely environment with a mix of twin, 3 and 4 bed rooms plus a large communal area relaxing and games. Students can also benefit from Stonar’s extensive leisure facilities. Pupils are taken care of by resident houseparents who look after both any practical concerns they may have as well as their overall wellbeing. All meals are taken in Stonar’s dining room and are freshly prepared onsite by our catering team. A tuck shop is open daily. Medical staff on site daily.
Summer students attending the programme will be offered the possibility of staying with a host family. Families are carefully selected from within the Bath area.
